How to Fix a Corrupted SD Card on Your Laptop/PC
If your SD card is corrupted and not responding on your laptop or PC, don't worry. Here are several methods you can try to fix the issue and recover your data.
1. Use a Different Card Reader or USB Port
Sometimes the issue is with the card reader or USB port, not the card itself. Try using a different card reader or USB port to see if it resolves the issue.
2. Check for Physical Damage
Inspect the SD card for any physical damage. If there are any visible issues, the card may need to be replaced.
3. Assign a New Drive Letter
- Open Disk Management by pressing Win + X and selecting Disk Management.
- Right-click the SD card and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Click Change, choose a new drive letter, and click OK.
4. Use CHKDSK Command
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator by typing cmd in the search bar, right-clicking on Command Prompt, and selecting Run as administrator.
- Type
chkdsk E: /f
(replaceE:

5. Run Disk Check
- Open File Explorer, right-click on the SD card drive, and select Properties.
- Go to the Tools tab and click Check under Error checking.
- Follow the prompts to scan and fix errors.
6. Use Windows Diskpart Utility

- Type
diskpart
and press Enter. - Type
list disk
and press Enter to show all connected drives. - Identify your SD card from the list, type
select disk X
(replaceX
with the disk number of your SD card), and press Enter. - Type
clean
and press Enter to remove all partitions and data. - Type
create partition primary
and press Enter. - Type
format fs=fat32
and press Enter to format the SD card.
7. Reinstall SD Card Drivers
- Open Device Manager by pressing Win + X and selecting Device Manager.
- Find Disk Drives, right-click on your SD card, and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your computer, and the drivers should automatically reinstall.
8. Use Data Recovery Software
If the SD card is severely corrupted, you might need to use data recovery software like Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, or Disk Drill to recover files before formatting.
9. Format the SD Card
- File Explorer:
- Open File Explorer, right-click the SD card, and select Format.
- Choose the file system (usually FAT32 for SD cards up to 32GB or exFAT for larger cards) and click Start.
- Disk Management:
- Open Disk Management, right-click the SD card, and select Format.
- Choose the file system and perform the format.
10. Try on a Different Device
If the above steps don’t work, try accessing the SD card on a different computer or a device like a camera or smartphone.
11. Contact Professional Data Recovery Services
If the data on the SD card is critical and none of the above methods work, consider contacting a professional data recovery service.
By following these steps, you should be able to fix or at least recover data from a corrupted SD card. If the card is physically damaged or these methods don't work, it may need to be replaced.
